Engineering Manager

The federal government spends over $700 billion a year hiring private companies to do critical work, from staffing veterans’ hospitals and maintaining military bases to supporting federal logistics and IT. Many of those contracts legally require employers to set aside money for employee benefits, earned hour by hour. Today most of that is managed through spreadsheets, disconnected vendors, and compliance rules that are nearly impossible to navigate — so employers overspend and risk audits, and workers end up with benefits they can't use or never fully access.

CVRD is building the modern infrastructure for this market. Our platform helps employers track benefit dollars in real time, stay compliant, and manage healthcare, retirement, payroll, and reporting in one place, turning a complex, high-stakes system into software that actually works.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This is a hands-on role focused on building, improving and scaling our platform.

Experience in payroll, employee benefits, HRIS or similar business-critical software is highly desirable. If you've built complex SaaS products with challenging workflows, compliance requirements or business logic, we'd love to hear from you.

We are looking for a true "player-coach" who thrives in a fast-paced, "build the plane while flying it" startup environment. 

You will directly manage a high-performing team of 2 Senior Developers, write production code yourself whenever required, and own the technical roadmap end-to-end. You are agentic-first, bring a strong bias toward Test-Driven Development (TDD), and possess the network to bring on trusted freelancers or boutique agencies when extra leverage is needed to hit tight deadlines.

Product & Technical Ownership

• Own the technical roadmap end-to-end, working with the founder to convert business needs into specs and priorities - quickly.
• Write high-quality, production-ready code alongside the team to unblock bottlenecks and accelerate delivery.
• Architect scalable web applications and design robust, secure API integrations.
• Champion a strict culture of automated testing, including end-to-end (E2E) tests to maintain high velocity without regressing our production environment.

AI Evangelism & Operational Efficiency

• Serve as an active evangelist and super-user of AI-native coding tools.
• Architect developer workflows to orchestrate coding agents, maximizing output efficiency, code accuracy, and delivery speed.

Team Leadership & Hiring

• Directly manage, mentor, and elevate a team of 2 Senior Software Engineers.
• Own engineering hiring and talent acquisition as the team grows.
• Leverage your existing, trusted network of freelancers and agencies to bring in targeted support when needed to crush critical deadlines.

What Makes You Our 'Ace'

Essential Experience & Skills

• 10+ years of commercial software engineering experience.
• Action-First Mindset: Natural bias toward action, comfortable making decisions under ambiguity, and relentless about finding solutions in high-ambiguity environments.
• Testing & Quality Focus: Deep commitment to test automation and experience with E2E testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright) and experience with using technology such as TestContainers to accurately mock our production environment
• AI Coding Tool Evangelist: Power-user experience with Claude Code (or similar agents), with a proven track record of orchestrating them for maximum accuracy and productivity.
• Core Technical Mastery: Deep expertise in building scalable web applications, strong API design/integration, and top-tier debugging skills.
• Startup DNA: Proven experience navigating early-stage, fast-moving environments where adaptability is key. Preference for 1-10 experience.
